Amid the current debate on childhood nutrition and obesity, more than 15,000 children in childcare centers, pre-schools and grade schools in the Chicago and Milwaukee areas are benefiting from healthy meals five days per week, thanks to the vision of Jim Scharnell.

Scharnell, a Marine Corps veteran and former restaurateur who now lives in Barrington, Ill., has focused on childhood nutrition since launching Quality Catering for Kids in 1976. He’s gone so far as to hire a registered Dietetic Technician and to develop Nutrition Lesson Plans that, through a cast of “healthy heroes,” teaches the values of healthy eating. Each lesson is related to a specific meal menu (see enclosed example, or see the Lesson Plan page of our website to download the current volume). Printed Nutrition Lesson Plans are provided at no cost to QCK’s preschool clients. Quality Catering for Kids also gives away Healthy Heroes hand puppets.

Quality Catering for Kids provides nutritious hot lunches, breakfasts and snacks. Those ready-to-serve meals are delivered each day after being prepared in its USDA-certified kitchens midway between Chicago and Milwaukee.

Because of its size and experience, Quality Catering for Kids is able to provide its nutritious meals very cost-effectively – at a price usually below that of a brown bag lunch or lunches provided by other private services.

Parents benefit by having their children receive an affordable, nutritious meal and by being relieved of the daily chore of preparing a brown-bag lunch.

Child care centers, preschools and grade schools benefit from the convenience of having ready-to-serve meals delivered, and from the marketing value of offering high-quality nutritious meals.

Quality Catering has organic and vegetarian options and also provides nutritious meals to adult day care centers.

As you report on childhood nutrition and school lunches, feel free to contact the Quality Catering for Kids team as a resource for those articles. We can offer insights, background and story ideas.
